Teresa Johnson, OD, MSW - Unit Chair
Message from Unit Chair:
I’d like to thank everyone who has attended our networking events and CE workshops during this past year. It was wonderful to meet so many of you, and I am grateful for your support.
Please join us on May 8th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at Oak & Stone (5405 University Parkway #101) for our last networking event of the season. We look forward to seeing you there!
Social Work Month proved to be a busy time for the Sarasota/Manatee Unit. Our CE Event, “Challenges Facing Veterans,” was successful. Our presenters were outstanding, and their commitment to helping Veterans in our community was evident. We thank them, as well as the following sponsors: Tidewell Hospice who graciously hosted our event; JFCS of the Suncoast who was our Event Sponsor for this event as well as our Awards Dinner; and USF Sarasota-Manatee/Duvall Family Studies Initiative which provided breakfast and lunch.
(Ruth Brandwein - Lifetime Achievement Award; Iris Gale - Social Worker of the Year; Teresa Johnson - Sarasota-Manatee Unit Chair; Mary Smith, Executive Director of FND Manasota - Organization of the Year; and C.J. Bannister - Public Citizen of the Year)
Our Awards Dinner was held at Libby’s Café & Bar on March 26th. Our 2018 award winners are: Social Worker of the Year – Iris Gale, LCSW, BCD; Public Citizen of the Year – C.J. Bannister; Organization of the Year – Family Network on Disabilities of Manasota; Lifetime Achievement Award – Ruth A. Brandwein, MSW, Ph.D. Due to their continued gracious accommodation to Sarasota/Manatee Unit NASW-FL, we also presented an Award of Appreciation to Libby’s Café & Bar. Congratulations to all of our winners! Thank you for making meaningful differences in the lives of others in our community.
We also congratulate Dr. Ruth Brandwein, who has been notified that she will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Conference in June. This award is well-deserved. What a tremendous honor!
We are already planning for next year. Details for all events are still being worked out, so please check back as information will be posted when finalized. Our annual kickoff event will be in late August. We intend to offer mandatory CE trainings in September, October, and November. Our CE Event in March will focus on vulnerable communities.
Also, please begin to think of nominees for our annual awards. Let us know which social workers, organizations, students, and public citizens are making a difference in our community.
If you are interested in joining our steering committee, please let me know. Also, please contact me with any suggestions or concerns at email@example.com.
5/9/18 – Ruth Brandwein, PhD, MSW will present on PACE (Political Action for Candidate Election). Fruitville Library. 5:30-7:00 pm
