DISASTER RELIEF TASK FORCE

Mission Statement:
To involve professional social workers in disaster relief.

Hurricane season is fast approaching and the Disaster Relief Task Force still has much work to do in meeting the goals that was set out for it.

The Disaster Relief Task Force was created a little over a year ago in an effort to:

1. Establish and maintain a disaster relief database
2. Facilitate disaster-related educational opportunities
3. Link professional social workers with disaster relief programs.

Since the origin of this task force, there has been some constructive work towards these goals.

Last year, we held the disaster relief summit where we ironed out what was expected from the task force, what the role of the task force would be, and how to get people involved.

In addition, we have engaged in additional discussions with American Red Cross (with whom NASW has a national partnership with) and have promoted some trainings throughout the state.

But, there is much to do still. In previous newsletters, we had a survey for those interested to complete, this survey is again being printed here to offer opportunities for involvement. The purpose of this survey is to gather information on social workers throughout the state of Florida who have the training, or are interested in receiving the training, to be called into action in case of an emergency. If you are interested in being more involved with the disaster relief task force, please complete this survey and then fax or mail it to NASW Florida Chapter office.

We are also in need of volunteers to serve as regional coordinators. If you are interested, please send an email to jim@naswfl.org.

In the upcoming state conference, we will be further discussing the role of the disaster task force. I hope you will be there to network and to build our plans for an effective disaster relief team. If you would like to discuss this committee further, please email me at kat_land@bellsouth.net.
